Sub Account for an under-age person

The following is a guide to creating a Playstation Network (PSN) account for an under-age person (minor/child; generally under 18 years old). A master account is required before creating any sub-accounts. These articles may be helpful before you start:

1. Create new user

If you haven’t already done so you will need to create a new PS3 user that the sub-account is going to be assigned to.

2. Authorise creation of sub-account

A Master account must be used to authorise that a Sub Account be created. Once the consent is given, a code is emailed to the master account and the remainder of the sign-up process is done through the “Playstation Store for PC” website.

We recommend that you also authorise using the PS Store website. However: not all countries are available when signing up via the PS Store as are available via the PS3 (we have no idea why not…). Check our list of supported countries.

Proceed to:

2A. Authorise via PS Store for PC

  1. Go to the Playstation Store for PC New Account page (open in new window)
  2. Choose Continue[Screenshot]
  3. Choose your country, language and date of birth[Screenshot]
  4. You will be told that you do not meet the eligibility requirements for creating an account and that a parent or legal guardian (master account) is needed to help create the account. Choose Continue[Screenshot]
  5. Enter the email and password of the Master Account that will be associated with the new sub-account[Screenshot]
  6. Choose Continue to “We must have your consent to collect your child’s personal information and to share that information with third parties so that your child can access online services and content on Playstation Network. PSN will send an email to the master account’s email address. Check the email and follow instructions to complete the sub-account registration” (paraphased)[Screenshot]
  7. You will now be told that an email has been sent to the master account’s email address. Choose Continue[Screenshot]
  8. Jump to section 3: Continue registration
  • Start registration process
  • Enter info
  • Eligibility requirements
  • Enter master sign-in
  • Consent required
  • Email sent

2B. Authorise via PS3

  1. Log in to the user you are creating an account for. Go to the Playstation Network menu and choose Sign up for Playstation Network[Screenshot]
  2. When the account sign-up page appears, choose Yes, I want to create a new account[Screenshot]
  3. On the registration process page, choose Continue[Screenshot]
  4. Choose your country, language and date of birth[Screenshot]
  5. You will be told that a parent or legal guardian (master account) is needed to help create the account. Choose Continue[Screenshot]
  6. Enter the email and password of the Master Account that will be associated with the new sub-account[Screenshot]
  7. Choose Continue to confirm that the master account will be associated and can control the sub-account[Screenshot]
  8. Choose Continue to “We must have your consent to collect your child’s personal information and to share that information with third parties so that your child can access online services and content on Playstation Network. PSN will send an email to the master account’s email address. Check the email on your PC and follow instructions to complete the sub-account registration” (paraphased)[Screenshot]
  9. You will now be told that an email has been sent to the master account’s email address and that you will need to continue the registration on a PC. Choose Continue[Screenshot]
  10. Jump to section 3: Continue registration
  • Sign up for PSN
  • Account signup
  • Registration process
  • Enter info
  • Eligibility requirements
  • Master account info
  • Master confirmation
  • Consent required to collect child’s information
  • Email sent to master account

3. Continue registration

  1. Open the email titled “PLAYSTATION(R)Network Account Registration for a Child” and go to the Web site for account registration URL
  2. Type, or copy & paste, the code from the email into the Enter code form field. Tick the consent box, then click Continue[Screenshot]
  3. You should now be told “Email verification successful”. Click Continue[Screenshot]
  4. Click Continue to accept the terms of service and privacy policy[Screenshot]
  5. Enter new sign-in information for the child: a valid email address (sign-in ID) and password[Screenshot]
  6. Enter an online ID for your child. This will be a publicly viewable username and can not be edited later[Screenshot]
  7. Enter your child’s information: first name, surname and residential address (the address should be auto-populated from the master account details)[Screenshot]
  8. Review the account information, then click Confirm[Screenshot]
  9. The new sub-account should now be created![Screenshot]
  10. Log in as your child on your PS3, go to the Playstation Network menu, choose Signup/Sign-in and try out the new account

  • Create online ID
  • Enter child’s details
  • Confirm account information
  • Account created

I’m trying to follow steps outlined here to generate a master- and sub-account. However pretty much nothing works as explained here. Once I created an account for myself, I no longer have “sign up for PS network” available, so I can’t create another account. The only options I have after generating one PSN account is to sign in or out.

Do not EVER EVER EVER create a sub-account for ANY user.
It will only cause you headaches.

My brother has a sub-account, it’s now 8 months until he turns 18. When he does that, all his saves and all his trophies and his online nickname/alias will be gone since he will be forced to create a new account that is a master account to be able to play Bad Company 2 online (which BTW is rated 16 here in Sweden) with his brother (me).

Here are the steps I used to let me son play restricted content on the PS3

First: Go to “https://store.playstation.com/logout.action?logoutSuccess=true” and log in with your master account information.

Second, click on “Edit Parental Control Settings”

Third, select the subaccount e-mail address associated with the account you want to edit.

Fourth, In the field next to “Restrict Content Based on Age of User” select “No”

Fifth, click “Continue” at the bottom of the window. It will advise you that you completed the change.

If you click on “Continue” again it takes you to the main menu. You can log out from there or continue modifying your accounts.

Finally, if your logged in on the PS3, you need to log out and back in for the changes to take effect.

      Hope this helps.

      Peace,
      Lenzule

I saw your post as I have the same problem in that my sub account 8 yr son can not play COD WAW online under his profile. I followed your advice but get stuck on Fourth step as there is no field “Restrict Content Based on Age of User”. I have read a couple of posts advising this so am wondering wherther Sony have changed the Network Parental Control settings.

        Any ideas?

        Cheers

janneml, you need to first add the user account from the far left menu, then log into that account, then “sign up for PS network”.

    Hope this helps :-)

I am having a major issue and hope someone can help me sort it out. I created a master account and after a while of me and my son playing I wanted to start a subaccount and then when I did, i had figured i would just let my son use the master account seeing that he had played for so long and had his own friends, so that I did that and now cant remember what the subaccounts email or password, that I had set it up as, I am having a problem getting back all my friends threw the subaccount… our playstation broke after 3 years of game play and now I think I have totally lost all my contacts…… is there a way you can find out the sub accounts email and password…. I know the main account but not the sub….. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Is it even possible to change a sub account into a master? I don’t just want to make a new one as I have all my trophies on my current account….
    Any help?

  • http://www.lenphotografix.co.uk lee Norris

I have to say this is all frustraiting, my son asked to play online, I set up an account, he isn’t 15 yet but not far off he has played and completed both of Drakes fortunes, now wanting to play online he can’t because if the 15 age restriction.

I as his parent concider him sensible enough to play the game and also to play online having done so myself for a while I see nothing that could easily offend me or give me cause for concern.

Main point is I should be able to choose if my 14 year old son or even amy 7 year old should or should not be able to view certain content, not restricted via Sony.

Even Vidzone is locked out of his sub account as he isn’t old enough to watch music videos?????? OMG.

    • Tim

Use a PC to login to the master account and go to manage account. Select manage sub accouts. Change “Restrict Content Based on Age of User” to NO. I don’t know how much access that will provide. I’m hope it works for the games my son plays. Some of the garbage that get called music these days…not so much :)

  • april taylor

are subaccount only for minors i already have a master account and one other user as a subaccount i wanted to add other family members who’s exsisting playstation network members already so that we may all use the same wallet funds in ps3 store.

    • Lenzule

You can set up unrestricted accounts for your whole family and they will be able to use the same wallet off the master account. You can restrict how much money they use on a monthly basis out of the wallet.

These sub accounts will be different from any account they may have on another game console.

    Hi

Have use the whole day to try to get my son playing COD Black Ops online….

He has a sub account under my account… He is 11 YO. and I do not have any problem with him playing the game…

On the PS3 I have set all the P.C restictions to OFF. How ever the game still tells us that there is P.C inhibiting him from plaing on- line.

When i Log in to the maste account and go to manage sub accounts, there is no possibility to change anything about age ? (only chat restrictins and billing restrictions….)

What to do ? please help !!!

  • Mindy

I followed your instructions to try to allow my 12yr old to play unrestricted games, however it didn’t work. We’re in the U.S. and he wants to play Burnout Paradise, which is rated E, but even AFTER selecting unrestricted access in his subaccount online, he still can’t play it. Game clearly says for 10+ players, but PS3 is being more of a natzi parent than I am, and won’t allow him to play. Any ideas or suggestions? Says he’s not old enough to play ANY EA games online.

  • Dunedin

    Hi

I’m also having problems letting my son play online through a sub-account I set up for him. Main game he wants to play is Black -ops.

I followed the instructions given by lenzule (http://ps3explained.com/intermediate/sub-account-for-an-under-age-person/#comment-15426)but there is no “Restrict Content Based on Age of User” option shown in the menu or available under the other headings.

Does the UK have a revised menu or options system?

This is very frustrating, we have had the console for over 6 months and he has proven he can be responsible, plus if he uses my account to get online any change he makes affects my games settings (not that I get to play it very often).

The only other option I have is to create another master account in his name, which defeats the benefits of the sub-account.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

      Hi

I had the same problem with my son, I just called Playstation and they did it all for me, took all restrictions off and it works perfectly. I now have another problem with EA and Burnout Paradise saying can’t play as he’s too young (it’s a 13+ game). Have called Playstation 3 times and they have been fantastic all is well at their end as we took all restrictions off at Christmas for black ops. We’ve now come to the conclusion that it’s an EA issue and they have their own restrictions. I’ve yet to call them as it’s a $2+ charge per minute. If I found a solution I’ll post back. or if anybody else has a solution, please, please post. Thanks

After much surfing of the web fo answers iy appears to be an issue with EA and PS3. Can’t play the games online if under 15?

I gave up and created another master account – at least I know the user ID and password so can control it to a point and, if needs be, revoke access.

  • trollololol

8 & 11 year olds shouldn’t be online playing COD and games like this anyway, and its online restrictions that are stopping people under the correct age from playing online are made by the games publishers not sony (unless its published by sony)

    either that or just LIE

Question: My son has two ps3′s….one here and one over at he’s mom’s…..i created sub-acct under my master acct for him. If I download Black Ops “first strike” pack here, will he be able to access those new maps on mom’s house Ps3 ? He tried to download there but wouldn’t allow because of being a sub-acct. Thanks in advance for any and all help. :-)

    • http://ps3explained.com/ Flame

Usually content purchased from the PS Store can be used on more than one PS3. Check the description, it should say something like “usable on up to 5 PS3s”. I presume you bought the map pack on the master account? To get it onto the other PS3 you would need to make a new User and then log in with your master account, go to your download history, and download the map pack.

  • Born2golf

I’m trying to create a new sub account for my son, by going to the manage accoutnn section of my own account. This alerts me that I’m leaving the actual PSN to go to another site to do so. When I elect to continue it brings me to a site that is “down for maintenance”, so I cannot create the account. I assume the site is down due to the recent sony hacking incident, but am I trying to do this the right way anyway?

    • http://ps3explained.com/ Flame

It sounds okay – there are multiple ways to go about making Sub Accounts, including as shown in this article. But yeah the downtime is really dragging on now and a lot of PSN account functions are not working.

the same thing happened to me, i think u shuld just try to make a sub account directly from the ps3

Ok this happened to me too; I’m 12. I called up the playstation support, went though the ENTIRE process with them to make a sub account and as usual it did not work. She told me to keep trying because it was going to come back on.
