Sub Account for an under-age person

The following is a guide to creating a Playstation Network (PSN) account for an under-age person (minor/child; generally under 18 years old). A master account is required before creating any sub-accounts. These articles may be helpful before you start:

1. Create new user

If you haven’t already done so you will need to create a new PS3 user that the sub-account is going to be assigned to.

2. Authorise creation of sub-account

A Master account must be used to authorise that a Sub Account be created. Once the consent is given, a code is emailed to the master account and the remainder of the sign-up process is done through the “Playstation Store for PC” website.

We recommend that you also authorise using the PS Store website. However: not all countries are available when signing up via the PS Store as are available via the PS3 (we have no idea why not…). Check our list of supported countries.

Proceed to:

2A. Authorise via PS Store for PC

  1. Go to the Playstation Store for PC New Account page (open in new window)
  2. Choose Continue[Screenshot]
  3. Choose your country, language and date of birth[Screenshot]
  4. You will be told that you do not meet the eligibility requirements for creating an account and that a parent or legal guardian (master account) is needed to help create the account. Choose Continue[Screenshot]

  6. Choose Continue to “We must have your consent to collect your child’s personal information and to share that information with third parties so that your child can access online services and content on Playstation Network. PSN will send an email to the master account’s email address. Check the email and follow instructions to complete the sub-account registration” (paraphased)[Screenshot]
  7. You will now be told that an email has been sent to the master account’s email address. Choose Continue[Screenshot]
  8. Jump to section 3: Continue registration
  • Start registration process
  • Enter info
  • Eligibility requirements
  • Enter master sign-in

I keep getting the page saying down for maintenance.  My son has fifa12 codes he’s desperate to redeem. Any idea how long these things usually take to resolve?

    • http://ps3explained.com/ Flame

Problem is the “maintenance” has been on going for numerous months now (since the hack earlier in the year). I haven’t even heard any news from Sony that they recognise there is still a problem.

Try signing up on qriocity.com instead. I had this problem as well, so I emailed Sony and they told me to do so (it works).

    I can’t authorize my daughters sub-account…….. not happy…….

If you are on a sub account, parental restrictions need to removed via the support centre.
Give them a call and have the master account hold speak to them, and they can get them removed for you.

Why if I am creating a sub account for my child does it require an email address for my child?  Shouldn’t the account be created off of my email?  Like I am going to create 2 new email addresses for my kids.  duh

  • MomL

I have created a master account for me and a sub account for my son.  When he tries to sign on the PS3, he gets a “You cannot sign in using another user’s sign-in ID (email address).” message.  However, he is using his email and password.  Why can’t he sign on under his ID?

    • http://ps3explained.com/ Flame

You both need separate Users on the PS3. Create a new User for your son, then sign in to his account on that user.

      • etakretsof

thanks for that – after 2 hours of battling to set it up, my 9 year old is a very happy bunny!  Thank you…..

trying desparately to set-up my son’s PSP, so have created a master a/c & sub a/c when he try’s to log-on get error message ‘You cannot sign in using another user’s sign-in ID (email address)’ having read below can you reconfirm need 2 separate users on PS3 currently he only has once so am assuming I need to create 1 then he should be able to login ok? too late to try now as tucked up asleep but have been trying for 3 hrs to set-up so will give it another another tomorrow……

    • http://ps3explained.com/ Flame

Right. Two PSN accounts can not share the same PS3 User — you need one User per account.

      • Fi

thanks for speedy response; I’ll create a PS3 a/c for myself tomorrow – finger crossed as I haven’t a clue what I’m doing LOL!!!

Why does it request a Credit Card when setting up a SubAccount???  I don’t want to input that information.

yeah same thing happened to me. not going to give it away. not after what happened last year. i just don’t trust them anymore

I’ve got an sub-account, does it go away when I turn into 18 years old. Cause it’s very annoying, I can’t get online.

    • http://ps3explained.com/ Flame

No you’re stuck with it. You will have to make a new account (Master account) when you’re old enough.

  • Charlie

Ok, so I’m trying to create a sub-account for my nephew. Wait, let me rephrase that. I did manage to create one for him. I know this because when I access my master account on the play station website, it shows that he is registered as a sub-account under my account. But when I get on the PS3 itself and try to login with his preferred Sign-in ID and password, it shows that there is an error and couldn’t login into his brand new sub-account. Sony has irritated me in the past but this is total nonsense. I’ve tried the instructions under this page for the past couple days but when I hit the final step which is login to the new account under the PS3, it says it can’t login. I need help.

  • Peter

Hi. I’m tearing my hair out with this – everything seems so intuitive these days – except for Sony’s PS3!! Maybe I’m having a bad day, but I’ve been working on this for hours. I have the sub account set up on line and I set up a new user on the PS3 itself before I started – that’s how I got the who process started. Now I go back onto the PS3 hoping to sign in my son and there is no way of signing in, without creating a new user – doing this just sets the whole proces off again. It must be soimething I’m missing. What am I doing wrong?

    • http://ps3explained.com/ Flame

Do you have the login details (email/password) for you son’s PSN account? Go into his User on your PS3, and if you see “Sign up for Playstation Network” go into that.  On the first page (maybe second page) you should see “Use existing details” (or similar) — choose that and you should be able to enter his PSN details.

      • Peter

Hi Flame, thank you for that, I do have those details, so will try it. I thought I had tried it already, but have to admit I was more than a little frustrated by this time and have quite possibly overlooked trying that! Seems obvious now you say it. Thanks again.

      • http://ps3explained.com/ Flame

I can sympathise! Sony did create quite a mess with their account system.

  • Logical

BOTTOM LINE, from what I found out, a sub-account on PSNw cannot logon for gaming; each PS3 user name must have a separate main account.
This after following all directions (multiple times) and reading this thread; I finally had to email Sony directly.
This leads me to the next logical question: What is the use of a sub-account then? !

  • Vze2bxpi

I agree with most users here.  PS3 has the worst user setup out of any system on the market.  I do I.T. work for a living but yet, a simple setup of a sub account has me ready to throw this game system out of the window.  Everything is setup right. I see the sub account listed in the main account.  I have setup a new user as well and it shows up in the users list.  However, I still have not been able to set up an online ID for that under age user.  I am logged in as the underage user but when I goto SIGN IN, it only lets me put in my main user account.  If i put in the email address for the sub user, it tells me that I can not use another persons email !!!  How the heck do I assign the sub user an online ID so I can find that user online and play games with them?????

  • SidheDavalos

Why do I need to provide a new email address to set up a sub account?? That means 4 new email addresses to set up sub accounts for my children….how is this logical or feasible?? If it is a sub account, should it not be listed under my email address??

    • http://ps3explained.com/ Flame

Yeah I don’t think Sony thought it through… The account system isn’t designed very well.
