How to delete a PSN account

The following information was sourced from Sony’s (US/America) official “Knowledge Centre” FAQ.

When I contacted my local Australian PSN Support they flat out told me they could not delete PSN accounts. I will chase them up because it seems that someone somewhere has the power to “terminate” accounts!

Be careful though — it is not clear if an account termination would free up the sign-in email address or online ID (probably not).

Master account termination

FAQ #220 (updated 2008-03-10)

If your PLAYSTATION Network Master Account is terminated, you will not able to access your account on the PLAYSTATION®Network. This means all of the following:

  1. You will not have access to your master account. If you have sub accounts associated with your master account, then your sub account holders will also not be able to access their sub accounts.
  2. Any remaining funds in your wallet will not be returned to you.
  3. Any content or services you or your sub accounts may have purchased that may be accessible on the PLAYSTATION Network will not be available to you or your sub accounts, including any content that may have been downloaded to your PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system(s). Other content that may be accessible offline may be available for use after termination of your PLAYSTATION Network account if permitted under the specific terms and conditions for the content.
  4. Any ranking or scores, or game related information will not be retained or accessible by you or your sub accounts.
  5. You will not receive any refunds, or fees as a result of termination of your account. If you subsequently sign up for another PLAYSTATION Network account, your prior Online ID and the prior Online ID of your sub accounts may not be available to you or your sub accounts.

FAQ #221 (updated 2008-03-10)

If your PLAYSTATION Network Sub Account is terminated, you will not able to access your account on the PLAYSTATION®Network. This means all of the following:

  1. Any content or services you may have purchased that may be accessible on the PLAYSTATION®Network will not be available to you, including any content that may have been downloaded to your PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system(s). Other content that may be accessible offline may be available for use after termination of your account if permitted under the specific terms and conditions for the content.
  2. You will not receive any refunds, or fees as a result of termination of your account. If you subsequently sign up for another PLAYSTATION Network account, your prior Online ID may not be available to you.
  3. Any ranking or scores, or game related information will not be retained or accessible.

Can I delete a PLAYSTATION®Network account?

FAQ #342 (updated 2007-11-21)

Once a PLAYSTATION Network account is created, it cannot be deleted. If you would like to use a new (different) account, you will have to create an entirely new PLAYSTATION Network account.

Note: Purchased content cannot be transferred between different PLAYSTATION Network accounts. We apologize for any inconvenience.

How do I terminate my PLAYSTATION®Network account?

FAQ #222 (updated 2008-03-24)

Once a PLAYSTATION Network account is created, you can not delete it, although it can be terminated. To terminate a PLAYSTATION Network account, please contact Sony Computer Entertainment America’s (SCEA) Consumer Services’ Accounts and Billing line at 1-877-971-7669.

    I tried to create a new account AGAIN today.  I purchased a used system and I don’t know the former owner’s info.  Every time I go to create the account online (Sony should really make it possible to create a new account on the PS3 if it’s connected to the net) I get that bogus gray page you’ve all seen a million times already if you’re having the same problem as me that says it’s under maintenance.  HELP!

      You can create a new account from the ps3. Create a new user and go to the sign in screen at the top of network. The bottom of the page has a link to create a new account.

      It is possible to create an account through the ps3 at the moment, I just did it.

        I tried and tried and tried to create a new account through ps3 but everytime I enter all of my account info (which is needed while signing up) it only shows me that same bogus message again and again “incorrect id & password” I have’nt even made a single acccount on that user ever before :( HELP!!!

    I recently received an email saying that I had signed up for a PlayStation EU account. Funny thing is that I don’t own a Playstation, never signed up for an account, and live in the USA.

    In the email it does say:  

    If you did not register for this service…
     This email has been sent to you because a PlayStation(R)Network account has been created with this email address. If you did not register for this service, please contact Customer Support using the contact details found at http://eu.playstation.com/help-support.
    Problem is that there’s nothing on that page to delete the account or contact anybody.

    How screwed up is sony that they don’t do email verification before letting people create obviously fake accounts with other people’s email addresses? Who can I contact at Sony to have this idiot’s account terminated?

    I bought a friends ps3 cause i got the YLOD, so i plugged it in, and signed him out of his ps3, tried logging in with my own, but it said that i couldn’t log in with another person’s ID, what should i do?

      Go to left on the menu and make a “New User” under the “Users” tab… Go into that and go to “playstation Network” and “sign up for psn” Then you’ll be asked to create new or use old one… just click the use old one and it’s pretty self explainitory after that :)

    Hi, I have recently come back from holiday and I can’t remember my
    password; i’ve tried a couple that I can remember but it keeps on saying
    my email or password is incorrect. I don’t want to lose all of my
    trophy data, because I know if I make a new account and user all my data
    will be lost or some data will not be transferable. I want to make a
    new account but still have all my trophies etc. there plus my saved game
    data; how can I do this?
     I also tried the ‘forgot password’ option and then typed in, correctly my DOB, but
    the ps3 replies ‘invalid information entered’  so I don’t know what to
    do. How can I make a new account and profile and transfer all my old
    data to the new one? I also read somewhere you can back up everything,
    including Trophy and saved data, onto a hardrive and then when you make a
    new account you can transfer it over. If this is true can you write
    down the steps to do this…

      It wouldn’t surprise me if PSN is still broken and just giving you a generic error.  Looks like the web log-in is still unavailable – this would have been an easier/better place to try to recover your details http://au.playstation.com/psn/store/

      Edit: Only other option really would be to contact Playstation Support for your country.

    Hi, I wanted to make a new PSN account, but someone else has already used it in a different country. I have contacted tech support in my country and they gave me an e-mail to contact tech support of the country that the PSN account using my e-mail was created from. I have not received a reply (it has been over a week), is there anything i can do to use my e-mail to make a new PSN account???

    I have a little theory here. I noticed if you go to the Qriocity website, it allows you to register for a new account. On there, it says that you can use one account to access both Playstation Network and Qriocity. If someone can test this out and confirm, that’d be pretty cool. So, in that respect, you would go to https://account.qriocity.com/pc/reg/account/create-account!input.action and create a new account. It says on the right “You can even update your account to access the Playstation Network.” 

    If this means what I think it means, all you do is create your account there and sign into PSN using that. I hope I am right since the actual playstation signup page has been down so long..

      Also, if you manage to get into your account, you can change your e-mail login from within qriocity. Its under the account tab and then the “Account Details” on the left once you are logged in. It also provides a “forgot your password?” feature that uses the e-mail if you remember it and the date of birth. It lets you manage subaccounts and even lets you see your transaction history.

      I try since yesterday morning (24h), to reset my pw of my PSN account (i forgot it). On the official site the reset pw button doesn’t work – all links are broken or refere to the site which is under maintenance since ages.
      Using your link, I came to the site of qriocity where I could reset my pw of my PSN. Interressting here – I never used qriocity… so no need to

        I’m not sure why but when I looked into supported countries the lists were different depending on if you tried to sign up via the website or through the PS Store/PS3.  See our supported countries list.

        “Incorrect ID and password” sounds like there is already an account attached to your PS3 User. Have you checked our sign up guide? You may need to create a new User and sign up for a PSN account with that.

      no, because you cant delete a psn account, all you did was delete the account from your ps3, you can bring that account back up by creating a new user then choosing sign in using existing account under the psn icon on the main xmb, then you will see your content in your download list

    Alright so here is my problem , I recently broke my ps3 and bought a new one off Kijiji,
    I got a good deal for it and it works perfectly . I hooked it up and I did a system restore before I did anything to it . I then tried making a Online account , it says that I need to have a password for the master email account . But the thing is . The guy I bought the ps3 off of does not remember his email address and password for the master account . He only remembers his username for online gaming . So I can’t even make a online account until I get the master account information . Is there anyway I can by pass this step . I even put in the date of birth and it just says my information is in correct . My friend tried making changes to his account a week ago and he put in all his correct information and it said his password or email was incorrect . Help ????

      all you have to do is create a new user, then go to sign up for an account under the psn icon

    i need to terminate it. As much as possible, I really wanted to delete it. I’m from the Philippines. Because Philippines is not among the choices as you create the account, I tried to choose Hong Kong because I thought it has something to do with time zones. As I had created it, I thought I need to choose USA because I think it’s like the default for me. HELP! If I just not use the account, I cannot use my email again….

      If all you’re having trouble with is the email, change it to a fake one before you make another account. That’s what I did, and I was able to use my email on a new account

    How do I change the master account on my PS3 if the email account linked to it is no longer in existence and I can’t remember my password?  If I click on “forgot password” it will send information to the email that no longer exists.

      Go to your e-mail and try to enter. You might be asked personal questions that should be no problem to you. You should be able to get into your old e-mail even though it’s been deleted (my guess). If not you should make a new e-mail (last resort).

      You shld still have it?, but if you need to free up some systems for downloading content (max of 5) you can call customer service and ask to have the systems that are active reset. Tell them you travel alot and have owned multiple PS3s, and download your games on the road so you can bring the games/add-ons you PAID FOR along with you. Good luck, worked for me.
