How to delete a PSN account

The following information was sourced from Sony’s (US/America) official “Knowledge Centre” FAQ.

When I contacted my local Australian PSN Support they flat out told me they could not delete PSN accounts. I will chase them up because it seems that someone somewhere has the power to “terminate” accounts!

Be careful though — it is not clear if an account termination would free up the sign-in email address or online ID (probably not).

Master account termination

FAQ #220 (updated 2008-03-10)

If your PLAYSTATION Network Master Account is terminated, you will not able to access your account on the PLAYSTATION®Network. This means all of the following:

  1. You will not have access to your master account. If you have sub accounts associated with your master account, then your sub account holders will also not be able to access their sub accounts.
  2. Any remaining funds in your wallet will not be returned to you.
  3. Any content or services you or your sub accounts may have purchased that may be accessible on the PLAYSTATION Network will not be available to you or your sub accounts, including any content that may have been downloaded to your PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system(s). Other content that may be accessible offline may be available for use after termination of your PLAYSTATION Network account if permitted under the specific terms and conditions for the content.
  4. Any ranking or scores, or game related information will not be retained or accessible by you or your sub accounts.
  5. You will not receive any refunds, or fees as a result of termination of your account. If you subsequently sign up for another PLAYSTATION Network account, your prior Online ID and the prior Online ID of your sub accounts may not be available to you or your sub accounts.

Sub account termination

FAQ #221 (updated 2008-03-10)

If your PLAYSTATION Network Sub Account is terminated, you will not able to access your account on the PLAYSTATION®Network. This means all of the following:

  1. Any content or services you may have purchased that may be accessible on the PLAYSTATION®Network will not be available to you, including any content that may have been downloaded to your PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system(s). Other content that may be accessible offline may be available for use after termination of your account if permitted under the specific terms and conditions for the content.
  2. You will not receive any refunds, or fees as a result of termination of your account. If you subsequently sign up for another PLAYSTATION Network account, your prior Online ID may not be available to you.
  3. Any ranking or scores, or game related information will not be retained or accessible.

Can I delete a PLAYSTATION®Network account?

FAQ #342 (updated 2007-11-21)

Once a PLAYSTATION Network account is created, it cannot be deleted. If you would like to use a new (different) account, you will have to create an entirely new PLAYSTATION Network account.

Note: Purchased content cannot be transferred between different PLAYSTATION Network accounts. We apologize for any inconvenience.

How do I terminate my PLAYSTATION®Network account?

FAQ #222 (updated 2008-03-24)

Once a PLAYSTATION Network account is created, you can not delete it, although it can be terminated. To terminate a PLAYSTATION Network account, please contact Sony Computer Entertainment America’s (SCEA) Consumer Services’ Accounts and Billing line at 1-877-971-7669.

okaii that I understand, but what if I create a new usuer is there any way to delete the other user to make the new one primary without losing any data. Or is there a way to transfer data to the new user account????

    Reply

  2. Benny

you can transfer data from one user to another, but when you play a game with the save files you transferred you will not earn trophies

  3. Edgardo

So you wouldn’t suggest making a new profile copying and pasting from the old profile to the new and deleting the old user??

There’s no way to still earn trophies with a copied saved game. Or a way to back up the data if I was to do a system format????

    Reply

  5. Benny

if you dont care about trophies go for it.
what happens is if you are playing say.. GTA4 if you are playing that game with the save data you played with on the other user/account it wont let you the trophies on your new account whilst you are playing on the previously mentioned save data

I bought a PSN card the other day and wanted to redeem it. But since I have a sub-account it won’t let me. So I thought “ok, I’ll just make dad redeem it because he has the master-account over me.” But then I rembered: When I made my account I set the *monthly spending amount* option to zero. I never thought I would use PSN (because i never like to use credit card an stuff like that) but when these cards came, I took the chance on bying one. And now i’m stuck. So my question is: How do I change the details regarding payment in my sub-account? please answer :D

By now you’ve probably either figured it out or given up, but you should be able to create a new user and when you log in to create your PSN account select “Use existing” (or whatever). That should link the new PS3 user to the original master account.

      Reply

      • jwbards

In case that wasn’t as clear as it should have been, what I meant was select “Use existing” and select the username/password of the existing master account. If you had a credit card associated with it, you’ll need the credit card.

    Reply

    • Flame

Scud77: Yes because the PSN accounts are stored online, not on the PS3. On your new PS3 just recreate the Users and sign in to their PSN accounts and you’ll be fine.

So … 2 days ago my son wanted me to set up a PSN account for him on the PS3 we’ve had for over 2 years now. By mistake I created the master account under his user (we’d never even bothered to create users other than his) and now he’s stuck w/ my online name and I’m stuck w/ the fact that I can’t restrict his access or spending (he’s trustworthy, but it’s still not ideal). I created a new user and linked his sub-account to it, but after 2+ years he’s collected a fair number of trophies that he’d like to keep but which can’t be transferred to the new user. From everything I’ve found on the forums (and talking to Sony support), there’s no way to resolve my problem. If someone knows different, please let me know. Could someone also tell me the best way to lodge a complaint with Sony? Not that it’ll help resolve the problem, but it’d make me feel better. I guess I understand why Sony doesn’t want people transferring trophies all over the place, but after poking around online for a while, there are a lot of people out there who have made the same mistake I did. A one-time opportunity to switch PSN accounts associated w/ a user name would be huge.

Hi jwbards – yes the accounts should be so much better. It’s like Sony failed to spend any reasonable time actually thinking through how accounts etc would/could be used.

We have Playstation Support contact details if that is any use.

Thanks Flame. I’ll send in a suggestion to at the very least make it more obvious when creating a PSN account that once it’s linked to a user it can’t be un-linked. A nice short paragraph with a big “READ THIS – IMPORTANT” at the top might’ve saved me a bunch of wasted hours on this beautiful weekend! Might at least save others the same headache in the future.

i used to have an xbox360 and then got a ps3 my mate set it up 4 me but put his detals in so im on his account i made anther 1 but it wont let me sign in with it on the offline accout but dont want to make anuther account so is it possable to delete his account off the ps3 so my account will work with the off line 1

    Reply

    • jwbards

If you haven’t done much w/ your PS3 user (ie, offline), your best bet is to delete it, create a new, and link your own PSN account to it. As far as I’ve been able to figure out, either online or talking to Sony, the relationship between the PS3 user and PSN account is one-to-one, and once the link’s been created it can’t be broken.

is there any way to change the name of the PSN account for free

      • Flame

Unfortunately once you’ve made a PSN account the online ID / profile name is locked in and can’t be changed.

      • jwbards

Don’t know if it’s possible to create two PSN accounts linked to the same e-mail address. If so you could just start all over – create a new user on your PS3, a new PSN account, and link the two.

Does anyone ever have this same problem? how to solve this? thank you so much for your information

Bought a new PS3 or a used PS3 from someone? Sounds weird if the former. If the latter, you should be able to create a new user on the PS3 and create a new PSN account to go with it.

its a brand new PS3, and yea its weird, but i bought it already out of town, so i could not returned it. So how can you change the master account that binded with the console right now? thanks

    Reply

    • jwbards

It should work if you create a new user on the PS3 (and then you can delete the one that’s already on there). When you log onto PSN from the new PS3 user it should ask you to create a new PSN account (or log onto an existing). Be careful, though. Once you create the PS3/PSN link it can’t be undone.

i did that and it works, thank you for the info. but now another problem appear. I cannot copy all my saved data to my new user. i can only copy few of my saved data, and mostly it said “you cannot copy this type of data” while it is all the same saved data. And if i delete it, that means i have to re-play most of the games again. Does anyone ever have the same problem too? thank you

There I think you’re out of luck. Same issue I had w/ my son – he’s now playing w/ my master account under his user name so he didn’t lose all his stuff. I made the assumption that you hadn’t done much under the original user – sorry.

      Reply

      • Flame

Yeah if the save data is “protected” (you can see this in the file Information) then it can’t be copied. A real nuisance because it’s also not possible to make backups of those files either.

  37. punker

yea, it sucks that way. Anyway, thanks for your information guys. Appreciate it
