How to delete a PSN account

The following information was sourced from Sony’s (US/America) official “Knowledge Centre” FAQ.

When I contacted my local Australian PSN Support they flat out told me they could not delete PSN accounts. I will chase them up because it seems that someone somewhere has the power to “terminate” accounts!

Be careful though — it is not clear if an account termination would free up the sign-in email address or online ID (probably not).

Master account termination

FAQ #220 (updated 2008-03-10)

If your PLAYSTATION Network Master Account is terminated, you will not able to access your account on the PLAYSTATION®Network. This means all of the following:

  1. You will not have access to your master account. If you have sub accounts associated with your master account, then your sub account holders will also not be able to access their sub accounts.
  2. Any remaining funds in your wallet will not be returned to you.
  3. Any content or services you or your sub accounts may have purchased that may be accessible on the PLAYSTATION Network will not be available to you or your sub accounts, including any content that may have been downloaded to your PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system(s). Other content that may be accessible offline may be available for use after termination of your PLAYSTATION Network account if permitted under the specific terms and conditions for the content.
  4. Any ranking or scores, or game related information will not be retained or accessible by you or your sub accounts.
  5. You will not receive any refunds, or fees as a result of termination of your account. If you subsequently sign up for another PLAYSTATION Network account, your prior Online ID and the prior Online ID of your sub accounts may not be available to you or your sub accounts.

Sub account termination

FAQ #221 (updated 2008-03-10)

If your PLAYSTATION Network Sub Account is terminated, you will not able to access your account on the PLAYSTATION®Network. This means all of the following:

  1. Any content or services you may have purchased that may be accessible on the PLAYSTATION®Network will not be available to you, including any content that may have been downloaded to your PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system(s). Other content that may be accessible offline may be available for use after termination of your account if permitted under the specific terms and conditions for the content.
  2. You will not receive any refunds, or fees as a result of termination of your account. If you subsequently sign up for another PLAYSTATION Network account, your prior Online ID may not be available to you.
  3. Any ranking or scores, or game related information will not be retained or accessible.

Can I delete a PLAYSTATION®Network account?

FAQ #342 (updated 2007-11-21)

Once a PLAYSTATION Network account is created, it cannot be deleted. If you would like to use a new (different) account, you will have to create an entirely new PLAYSTATION Network account.

Note: Purchased content cannot be transferred between different PLAYSTATION Network accounts. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Ouch, Lee. Sounds like your PS3’s drive laser has burnt out. If nothing at all is working in the drive you’d want to take it back under warranty to get it fixed.

  9. 9
    Flame

profool: Is the sub-account associated with another user on your PS3? You would need to log into that user, then log into PSN.

    Flame

Hi Tim, there’s no reason why an x-ray would harm the PS3. It’s like putting a laptop through, so there shouldn’t be any problem at all.

Richard, you need to create a Master Account rather than a Sub-account. Check our guide.

Well it seems that not being able to log into PSN after someone else has used the PS3 for their account is a huge confusing problem… it also looks like Flame is avoiding that question. I have created an account with no sub-account so that will not help me. I need to log into my PS3 that I purchased from a friend that has all his info still on it. I tried to restore default settings, and his info is still on the sign-in portion. Help us flame… please!

i cant play gta 4 online with my sub account, it says “Your playstation network account does not have the correct permission to play online” do i need to be on a master account to play?

  25. 25
    Flame

adrian: You may have to do a factory reset to clear everything first.

yojimbo: Just log in and go to Account Management.

Jesse: I don’t totally understand your situation, but if a PSN account is already registered on your PS3 (to a specific user) then you need to create a new User and associate your own PSN account with that User.

Mike: You can’t really delete your account, but you can make a new User on your PS3 and register a new PSN Master Account for that User.

karl: I’m not sure what you’re talking about, any more details?

bleh: Are you old enough to play GTA4? It will restrict you for online play if you aren’t. Generally sub-accounts are a problem for online play, but you should check that the Master Account has not locked your access down. Otherwise, yeah, a master account should work fine.

i had the same problem most of you had (bought a used ps3 - couldnt log-in to the store sinec you dont have the password).

you have to go to the first button on the XBM and create a new user. once that’s done, you can select that user and, since its new, the store will prompt you for email address / pw / etc etc.

i have no idea how to actually remove the original owners information, but i dont think it really matters.

hey,i was wondering when you use the restore ps3 system does it delete all your stuff including the user name which has the SSID name and password.cause people say once the name has been done, its saved in your router.i was wondering why im not connecting to the network.

  28. 28
    Flame

xNickx: The SSID is for a wireless network. The setting may not be restored, so you’ll probably have to go into the Network settings and re-detect the wireless connection.
