Users

You can have multiple “users” on one PS3
Each user has their own:

Theme & background settings
Save data for PS3 games & software
Trophies
Friends list & messages (when associated with a Playstation Network account)

All users share:

Saved data for PS1/PS2 games
Games in the Game menu
Everything in the Image, Music, and Video menu

Not password protected
Each user can be associated with one Playstation Network account.

Playstation Network (PSN) Accounts

There are two types of PSN accounts: Master and Sub. Both types have these properties:

Password protected
Online ID (nickname)
Access to online community & Playstation Store
Mailbox for sending & receiving messages to other accounts
Trophy collection that can be viewed by friends

PSN accounts do not cost anything to create and there is no subscription fee. An account is required to play games online.

Eligibility requirements for master accounts and sub accounts vary depending on the country or region of residence.

PSN Master Accounts

These are standard accounts. You need to be a certain age (generally 18 or older) to create a master account. With one you can:

Use a “Wallet”–add billing information to make purchases on Playstation Store
Associate (manage) up to six sub-accounts

PSN Sub Accounts

Sub-accounts (“subordinate accounts”) can be used by anyone, including children/minors. They are assigned to a master account (e.g. of the parent/guardian) therefore a sub account can not be created without an existing master account.

Some games are known to prevent sub-accounts from playing online (offline works fine), despite the user being a reasonable age and having the consent of the parent. If you are creating an account for your child and will allow them to play games online and do not need to control their actions, it would be advised to create a Master account for them.

The associated Master Account has the following control (Parental Control Settings) over the Sub Account:

Finances
Some voice/video chat restrictions

Not really sure then, Dwezal. That message is commonly when trying to use a sign-in email address or PSN account on more than one of your PS3 Users, or trying to sign-in on the wrong User.

soo when u type your id (e-mail) for the master account and it says either e-mail or password incorrect, its saying that because your date of birth is under the date and birth of an 18 year old soo you would need to fake your age soo u can get a master account yea ?

i have an account name under DeltaSicks for PS3 and the only game i play is Battlefield bad company 2. all i want is to be able to play on that screen name with all my trophies and rank info. i put in alot of work and was ranked pretty good. please tell me my Delta screen name still exists and how do i log on to it from a different PS3 because im about to buy one. i used to play from my room mates PS3.if i buy my own, will i still be able to play with all of my info? please e-mail me back lavonjherald@yahoo.com

Yes your PSN account is saved online. When you go to the new PS3, make a user and sign in with your DeltaSticks details. Hopefully you sync’d all the trophies on the room mate’s PS3.

I made my PSN account last year, it’s got my real DoB, and I’m 17. There was no master account on my PS3, until today, because I’ve had no bother with the whole “sub” and “master” accounts thing. Now I can’t sign into my PSN account, ’cause I need a master account, so I used my step-dad’s sign in details. It’s still not working. I can’t work out how to reaccept the terms and conditions, which the PS3 is telling me to do. I don’t want to make a new sub-account, as obviously I’ve got a lot of stuff on that account seeing as I’ve been using it for more than a year!
Can anyone help me out? I’m really stuck.

Yes you can have multiple PSN accounts, you just need a User on your PS3 for each account.

Did you make a third User on your PS3? You can only associate one PSN account to one User e.g. User1 -> Master account, User2 -> Subaccount 1, User3 -> New subaccount

How do you make a sub-account if you don’t have a CC to validate to prove you are the master account? Why isn’t the email/password/system password good enough to varify that an adult is trying to make a sub account on the PS3?

I think I messed up trying to set up a network account for my son. When it told me he needed a master account due to his age, I set one up with his dad’s info under my son’s user name. I thought I would then be able to make a sub-account under his user name, but not so apparantly. What can I do? Is there a way to take this network account off of his user name and put it on his dad’s user name and then make a sub-account under my son’s name? So confusing. I’m thinking he may have to delete his user name and start over, but then he’ll lose his saved games, which will upset him. Help!

User ID is the account name/nickname e.g. “Flame” or “kieran”. See our PSN article.

Friend came to my house to use the PS3 so we could play online. He set up an account with a stupid name, but didn’t care. He since bought a PS3 for himself, setup a new account, and it works fine.
When he came back to my house, he wanted to pull up his account so he made an account on mine, and tried doing the PSN with his email and password, but it keeps pulling up his old stupid online name, not the one from his own PS3 with all the tropheys, etc…
How can he have his account loadable from 2 PS3′s, and how can we remove/delete/destroy the old PSN account? We removed all the user names on my PS3, made him a new one, but when we put in his email for PSN, it still pulls up the old info, not his current account.

Here are the steps I used to let me son play restricted content on the PS3

First: Go to “https://store.playstation.com/logout.action?logoutSuccess=true” and log in with your master account information.

Second, click on “Edit Parental Control Settings”

Third, select the subaccount e-mail address associated with the account you want to edit.

Fourth, In the field next to “Restrict Content Based on Age of User” select “No”

Fifth, click “Continue” at the bottom of the window. It will advise you that you completed the change.

If you click on “Continue” again it takes you to the main menu. You can log out from there or continue modifying your accounts.

Finally, if your logged in on the PS3, you need to log out and back in for the changes to take effect.

Can I create a second master account with a different address ? We have a second home in France and want to use our PS3 there and download movies but it says our location doesn’t match our registered address. PS3 helpline says I will need to set up a new master account with the french address but doesn’t explain how I do it and/or if I have to delete our uk address.

I’m 13 years old and want to play assassins creed brotherhood online but it won’t let me because of parental control settings on my psn account. I’ve looked through all the parental control settings and secturity setting on the ps3 and I still can’t change this. I’ve also tried what Lenzule said to do, but whenever I clicked on “Edit Parental Control Settings”, it doesn’t have the “Restricted Content Based on Age of User” option, so that didn’t work either.
I really want to play online because I’ve got the special edition brotherhood and I can’t access any of the special features without going online, I NEED HELP!!!

I need help. I created a Master account on the wrong user on my PS3. I now need to transfer it to another user but can’t seem to figure out how. PSN won’t let me sign in on the desitantion user account as is states the account is already in use on the console. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ace – yes your PSN account is independant of your PS3 so you can just log in again. You may lose some trophies though, depending on when you last performed a trophy sync.

Hey everyone, spent ages online looking for a solution to my problem. I have a PS3, and my 2 sons have a PS3 each (3 in total in the household) They each have their own Names on their PS3′s but when I set them up I was certain I made mine the Master, and theirs sub accounts. The problem I have is that now, when I try and sign in to the PSN I get an error. “You must ask the holder of the associated master account to help you sign in.”

I need to know:

1. Can I find out which account is master over my account?
2. Can I change my account to a master account?
3. Is it possible to make sure my sons accounts are both Sub accounts?
