Users, Accounts and Sub Accounts

Users

  • You can have multiple “users” on one PS3
  • Each user has their own:
    • Theme & background settings
    • Save data for PS3 games & software
    • Trophies
    • Friends list & messages (when associated with a Playstation Network account)
  • All users share:
    • Saved data for PS1/PS2 games
    • Games in the Game menu
    • Everything in the Image, Music, and Video menu
  • Not password protected
  • Each user can be associated with one Playstation Network account.

Playstation Network (PSN) Accounts

There are two types of PSN accounts: Master and Sub. Both types have these properties:

  • Password protected
  • Online ID (nickname)
  • Access to online community & Playstation Store
  • Mailbox for sending & receiving messages to other accounts
  • Trophy collection that can be viewed by friends

PSN accounts do not cost anything to create and there is no subscription fee. An account is required to play games online.

Eligibility requirements for master accounts and sub accounts vary depending on the country or region of residence.

For details, read the Terms of Service for your region.

PSN Master Accounts

These are standard accounts. You need to be a certain age (generally 18 or older) to create a master account. With one you can:

  • Use a “Wallet”–add billing information to make purchases on Playstation Store
  • Associate (manage) up to six sub-accounts

PSN Sub Accounts

Sub-accounts (“subordinate accounts”) can be used by anyone, including children/minors. They are assigned to a master account (e.g. of the parent/guardian) therefore a sub account can not be created without an existing master account.

Some games are known to prevent sub-accounts from playing online (offline works fine), despite the user being a reasonable age and having the consent of the parent. If you are creating an account for your child and will allow them to play games online and do not need to control their actions, it would be advised to create a Master account for them.

  • The associated Master Account has the following control (Parental Control Settings) over the Sub Account:
    • Finances
    • Some voice/video chat restrictions

    Hello,

    Thanks for the fast answer.

If I start up the ps3 on my existing user, which is a master account and I lost my password for the things you can acces with a master account. Also when I choose the master account, it logs me in automaticly. So I have to log out and choose the retrieve password feature? Is the password for the master account, the same password as for your PSN account? If its not I actually lost both passwords,

    1: Of my PSN account
2: Of my master account on the ps3.

Say I create a new account on the ps3, and im using the existing user I made earlier on the PSN. Can I make a master account out of that account? Or is it going to become a sub account.

Already many thanks for ur first answer, and I really appreciate Ur help,

    Jelle

Jelle: PSN accounts are not so complicated. When you create a PSN account you are creating either a Master Account or a Sub Account. Masters are the normal ones.

You can only assign/associate one PSN account with one User on your PS3. So because you already have a user with a PSN account you need to make a new user to be able to use an additional PSN account.

To recover a password, it would be easiest to go to the PS Store for PC and click “Forgot password”.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

Is it possible to assign different PSN accounts to different controllers within a game? For example, on Beijing 2008, I play as kristofff, and have my own records that are saved, but my friends appear as kristofff_2, kristofff_3, kristofff_4, etc, and any records they set are not saved for future games. Is there any way I can have it so controllers 2+ have their own PSN accounts assigned? Thanks very much.

    Hello,

I have a similar question. The differance being is that, I have two PS3 in the house and using the same Network, however all accounts on both the PS3 are sub accounts of my original account. As a result we can not play the same game at the same time (online). Before I start creating new accounts can someone confirm that it’s the sub accounts that are causing the problem and not something on the network.

Janrok : to log into a new psn account, u need to open a new user(u cant log in to a different account from your user).

I am 14 and currently using a sub-account (hate lying about my age). I’m unable to access any online gaming features; it complains that parental restrictions are in order. Having looked at the possible options, it doesn’t appear to be an option to allow me to play online. Is there a reason for this, and can I remedy it?

I am 16 and it says I’m not allowed to access the PS3 HOME? I think somehow my age was incorrectly entered when my account was 1st set up. Is there any other way to change my age without starting a whole new account/user? My dad and brother both have master accounts on our PS3 and it lets them sign in just fine; is it possible that because I have a Sub-Account it won’t let me sign in? Does anyone have any idea of how to fix this…without starting a WHOLE NEW account?

Nope, any online content (besides LBP, which seems to be the only exception) on a sub-account is locked out. You’ll have to start a new account to play it.

I have a problem. I use my bfs account, and for some reason all new users seem to be assigned his PSN account when they try to connect to the PSN Store. I have a PSN account for my PSP so when I tried to login to the Store on the PS3 using my PSN account, it told me that I am not allowed to use another user’s account (yet it is my account). Help?

Ok so… here are my questions… can you still play downloaded games from other ps3 accounts other than yours? my situations is taht i have 1 sub account and also have a master “own” account… but these are not related so, a friend gave it to me with some money in the store wallet.. my second question is: can i relate my first sub account (with all purchased games) with my new master account?

In general, any games you download will be playable by all Users on your PS3 no matter what PSN account was used. Also generally a game can be used by up to 5 PSN accounts. This often leads to “game sharing” across friends’ PS3s.

Each game has their own rules though so check the info before you download.

Question about REsident Evil 5. I try to play co-op but I then realized that I cannot log in with two users at a time. Is it completely not possible to play with two users on one console so that both players have the full use of buying options during the game. Dont know if you can answer it, but I would really appreacaite if you could help with this,.

It’s not currently possible to log in with two PSN accounts at the same time on the same PS3. *However* there is news that Resistance 2 is going to introduce this feature, which I believe requires a system software upgrade. I doubt RE5 will implement it, but future games should.

Hi, I’ve been having trouble with Sub-Accounts and Home…

My son is 16 years old, and yet, when he trys to log on to Home, it says he’s “not old enough,” while the Terms and Agreement states that you must be over 13 years old to play. He is certain he put in his correct birthdate, too. How do I fix this?

I have 2 accounts on my PS3. One for my self (master account) and one for my 12 year old son. Now he want to play fifa 2009 with his 21 year old cousin. Because my son is not 18 yet, he can’t play online (I think)

What can I do to let him play. He can use my account, but that is not the proper way I think. How can help me out with this?

Hey, I’m only 13 and I’m trying to get all the trophies for Killzone 2. Now I have most of the offline trophies and so i decided to go try get some of the online ones. It is an R16 game so when i tried to go online for the multiplayer trophies, it wouldn’t let me due to age restrictions. I’m pretty sure my account is a sub-account so could i get the master-account to let me play games online over my age? Or do i have to wait the required 3 years until I am able to play onlie. Because I’m just borrowing the game and i don’t know if i would know the guy in 3 years time to get the game back again. So annoying. Sony is so brilliant yet so annoying!!!

Just say your 17 and make a sub-account. You turn 18 when the time comes, here`s my question. Will that account upgrade so you’ll be able to use credit cards on it, if not, how do you turn the age 18 account into another individual master account?
