Sign up to Playstation Network (PSN)

Although signing up to PSN and creating an account is fairly straightforward, there are numerous steps in the process. Here’s our step-by-step overview guide to creating your first account (a Master Account).

Note: Before you can sign up you may be required to update your system software.

Also the process below may vary depending on your country.

Account sign-up

To begin, go to the “Playstation Network” menu and choose Sign up for Playstation Network
Now the account creation begins. Since this is our first time signing up, choose Create a new account
This screen explains what information you will need to provide during the process. Choose Continue
Select your country, language and date of birth

Date of birth determines what account type will be created. If you are 18+, you will get a Master Account. Otherwise you will get a Sub-account. Learn more about accounts.

The terms of service and user agreement / privacy policy will now be shown. Choose Accept
Enter sign-in information: a valid email address (sign-in ID), password, and security question.

Enter your desired Online ID

The online ID will be your publicly viewable username.
It is not possible to change your online ID once your account is created.
If you continually get the message “The online ID you entered cannot be used” then it may already be in use. Also, there are keywords that are not allowed – for example having “PS3″ anywhere in the online ID. For more help, see common problems.

Enter your full name. Choose your gender if you wish (optional)
Enter your street address (residential address). Country/region is pre-filled by your selection earlier
Notification preferences. Tick any of the boxes if you’d like to receive marketing from Sony and/or affiliates
Review the details you’ve entered, then select Confirm
Account has been created!
You may be asked to answer a questionare/survey. Choose Yes or No
Choose an avatar (picture) for your account if you wish. It is easy to change it later at any time.
Welcome to Playstation Network. You can Proceed to Playstation Store if you want. This will prompt you to Sign In. Exit the Store to return to the XMB menu.
Now that you have signed up, the Friends menu will have new options like Message Box. You will also be shown here!

Start using your account

Play online games (e.g. multiplayer modes in LittleBigPlanet or MotorStorm)
Use Playstation Store (under Network menu) to download demos and videos and purchase games
Experience Sixaxis motion control

That means your PS3 User is now locked to your friend’s PSN account. The only way you can make an account now is to make a new User on your PS3 first.

hey , it doesnt work because uir parent doesnt haf a playstation account. Wen it asks for a parents email, they mean to say “enter yur parents playstation account email.

Yeah so shortly after posting to this website I posted a conspiracy theory about sony and the way PS3 always has to be fixed and I bragged about getting mine fixed for free long story short after they fix it you get a 90 day warranty at 91 days not kidding the light of death I think I am going to leave sony alone they are rich evil people and don’t need anymore of my money anybody wanna buy a PS3 it doesn’t work but there is a free porno included (Don’t ask)

Andrea, I would contact Sony about that, 1 day after the warranty expires is not acceptable, and I do believe most warranties have a short period after their expiry when it is still valid. So if it has died after 91 days you should still be eligible for repairs, and if not I would be making some serious complaints.

for street address 1 but your streets name and which town or city you live in for 2 put your county and for 3 put your post code that should work because it worked for me

If you are under age (e.g. under 18) then you are making a Sub Account and will be prompted for the Master Account details, because the Master needs to authorise you. You should get your parent to make a master account. Otherwise you need to lie about your age…

You may want to check the differences between users & accounts. The User’s name has no bearing on the PSN account “online ID”. If you’re trying to use an online ID that is in use, try our common problems tips.
